What is wellness?

Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health. Various areas of your life like exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness contribute to your overall wellness. Each one has an impact on both your physical and mental health. By simply adding one or more of these activities to your daily routine, you will be well on your way towards achieving optimal wellness!

My wellness journey

I fairly recently started taking my health and wellness very seriously. I had reached a weight that I felt was not healthy, and I decided that I needed to do something about it. I completely changed my diet and what I was eating, and started doing keto. Since I started, I’ve lost a decent amount of weight and feel really good inside and outside.

I’ve always practiced yoga, and am fairly new to meditation. Both of these activities, along with my change is diet has really helped me boost my wellness journey!

National Wellness Month

August is National Wellness Month and is a way to focus on self-care, managing stress and promoting healthy routines. It’s about creating wholesome habits in your lifestyle all month long and keeping that going all year long! National Wellness Month was founded by Live Love Spa in 2018 to promote the importance of wellness.

1. Increase your water intake

Drinking water is super important to your wellness and health. Water helps carry nutrients and oxygen to your cells, aids digestion, protects your organs and tissues, and helps regulate your body temperature. You should drink around four to six cups a day.

2. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet

Fruits and vegetables contain fiber, which aids in digestion and lowers your risk of certain diseases. Not a huge fan of eating raw or cooked vegetables and fruits? You can always get your fruit and veggie intake by adding them to smoothies and shakes. They blend really well and taste really good!

3. Develop a bedtime routine for better sleep

Bedtime routines are not just for kids! There are many benefits to adults having a bedtime routine as well. Having a bedtime routine helps you not only prepare and sleep better, but they also can help your brain separate the day from the night, clear your mind and body of the day’s stresses, and get into a relaxed state for peaceful sleep.

4. Take up yoga, walking or and aerobics class

Movement in any form is key to your wellness and health. If you are unsure about starting a yoga practice, you can take up walking or and aerobics.  Aerobics helps strengthen your heart, keeps your arteries clear, and reduces health risks.  Walking is also a great activity; it can help strengthen your bones and muscles, increase energy levels, and strengthen your immune system.

5. Learn how to meditate

Being aware of your emotional well being is important to your wellness. Meditation can help you with gaining a new perspective on stressful situations, building skills to manage your stress, increasing self-awareness, focusing on the present, reducing negative emotions, and increasing patience and tolerance.

Which of these five activities do you think you will add to your daily wellness routine? Simply adding just one or two activity can benefit you.

Meditation and Mind

Meditation is sometimes thought of a spiritual or religious activity, when it is more about yourself than anything. It is simply finding time to relax and rest your mind, focusing on your thoughts, breathing, and sounds around you. Mindful meditation has many benefits to both children and adults. The Yours app features meditation activities for everyone in the family; pre and post natal, children and teens!

What to take from this

The most important thing to take from this is to start with small changes to your daily routine. It is best to not make dramatic changes to every aspect of your routine at the same time, but to choose one aspect and go from there. Then once you feel comfortable making another change, do so. I had already been practicing yoga and meditation, so I went with a change to my diet and nutrition. Remember, you don’t have to run a marathon or go on a restrictive diet to implement wellness into your everyday life; there are plenty of activities and options out there, just find what best suits you!
