It all starts with positive parenting

There’s no secret that positive parenting is a great strategy for parents to use. There are benefits to both you as a parent as well benefits for children using conscious positive discipline strategies.  Conscious positive parenting is also referred to as mindful parenting too, since the basis of the technique is to be conscious and mindful of your words, actions, and reactions when parenting and disciplining.

Conscious parenting teaches adults to control their own emotional responses to children so they can stay present at the moment, connect with their child, and work together with their child through the feelings their child is having.

Ways to practice conscious positive parenting:

  • speak to your child in a respectful way
  • set clear expectations
  • be self aware of your words/actions
  • handle each child as their own individual
  • be empathetic and understanding of your child’s needs

It’s important to remember that conscious parenting is not about becoming a perfect parent. It’s about applying conscious, mindful changes. You may even mess up, but that it okay. Just realign and move onward.

The world of tantrums

I’m sure you’ve all experienced your child or another child throwing a tantrum. It can be hard to help a child calm down and relax once the tantrum has started. There are ways to help a child manage their emotions without throwing a tantrum, but first, let’s dive in to the world of why tantrums happen.

Tantrums are completely normal and typically happen between the ages of one to three years of age. Some children have them past three years of age, as no child is exactly alike. Some kids may have tantrums often, while others rarely have them or don’t have them at all. Tantrums are a normal part of child development.

Many times, tantrums occur when children get frustrated or angry, and cannot find the proper channels to express their emotions. Once a child learns how to positively manage their emotions, the frequency of tantrums usually decrease or completely stop altogether.

Contrary to what you may have heard, tantrums can be prevented! In the Montessori environment, there a few, if any tantrums. This is due to a few set principles that are discussed and implemented to prevent tantrums.

Here are a few ways to prevent tantrums from happening using Montessori principles:

  1. allow choices, within reason
  2. provide opportunities for your child to be independent
  3. allow freedom, with limits
  4. use questions instead of demands
  5. use of conscious positive parenting resources

  23. As we just became parents for the 1st time 3 months ago, I am not at this point just yet but it is always good to learn and be prepared. For example, I think for myself, I will really need to focus on being self aware of my words & actions around and toward little Ricky.
