How to make an Air Clay Diffuser Ornament
This is one of those DIY activities that children can participate in as well. Once the dough is made, you can easily have children help cut out the clay ornaments using cookie cutters and they can even paint them once they dry to add an even more personalized look to them!
Children will definitely enjoy this fun filled family activity, and these make great handmade, DIY gifts from children to loved ones! This particular recipe uses Candy Cane Essential Oil Blend and Cassia Essential Oil. Candy Cane Essential Oil Blend has a fruity and minty aroma, while Cassia Essential Oil has a spicy and warm aroma.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 cup of water
- 2 drops Candy Cane Essential Oil Blend
- 1 drop of Cassia Essential Oil
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup baking soda
SUPPLIES:
- ribbon or string
- cookie cutters
- scissors
- straw (recommended) or toothpick
- rolling pin
- small pot
- small cloth
- tempera paint in various colors (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
- Put the baking soda, corn starch, and water into a pot and mix until it becomes thick.
- Keep stirring until the mixture is thick enough to form a ball.
- Allow the dough to cool in the pan until it is safe to handle but is still warm.
- Remove the dough from the pan, wrap it in a damp cloth and allow it to cool.
- Roll out the dough and cut into desired shape.
- Using the straw, create a small hole at the top of the dough for hanging the string.
- Allow the dough to dry completely, at least 24 hours.
- Once the dough is dry, decorate your ornament with paint or if desired, you can just leave them plain.
- Cut the ribbon or string to your desired length.
- Add the ribbon or string to your ornament.
- Tie a small not on the end of the ribbon or string to secure your ornament.
- To use as a diffuser, add a few drops of essential oils directly to the dried ornament.
- Reapply drops of essential oils as needed.

** The recipe makes quite a bit of dough, so you can make around four to eight ornaments depending on how big or small your cookie cutters are . **
On a side note, the original recipe called for Lime and Cassia essential oils, but in my personal opinion, I liked the holiday vibes of Candy Cane mixed with the sweet smell of Cassia, so I changed the recipe before starting.
I also used a straw to make the hole instead of a toothpick. The hole that the toothpick left was a bit too small for the string that I wanted to use. You also have the option to not use essential oils at all, you can simply just make clay ornaments and decorate them with paint if you’d like! That’s the great thing about DIY crafts, you can customize them as you’d like to fit your personal preferences!

Happy DIYing and Oiling!
What a beautiful Christmas craft gift idea! Something a little different than the norm…and I love that! I love essential oils so can’t wait to try this out!
This looks like a lot of fun! Especially since it’s something I can do with me 3 year old! I think she finally at the age where subscription boxes is something she will benefit/enjoy.
I love these! I’m going to try and make them this year.
I love homemade gifts! Bet these smell great too!
First of all……..DIYing??!! I love it! And, I am not a DIY kinda girl, but this looks simple enough. Lavender is my favorite scent so those lavender buds alone would make me want to get the subscription box!
Love this! Pinning it and definitely going to make them ♥
This looks like so much fun đŸ¤© and easy to create. I have just recently learned the joy of oil diffusers. I can’t wait to give this a shot.
I love the idea of the diffuser ornaments. I am already thinking of which “evergreen” blends to include to help my artificial tree smell like a real tree! I am also thinking this would make a great Mother’s Day gift for my students to make. Thanks for the idea!
I have never tried essential oils, but my oldest daughter does. She is off at college now but she uses oils and incense. She says they help her to relax.
Good luck,
Wayne
DIYs are my jam as well. I love the clay ornaments. I definitely will try this with my two year. He is so advanced for his age, so I like to challenge him. Thanks in advance.
