Don’t think yoga is for you? You’re wrong!
Yoga can be a great way to get yourself on a regular exercise routine. There are so many benefits of yoga. You can use yoga to gain strength, to lose weight or to tone muscles. It is a great way to maintain a healthy mental state as well, as you bring awareness to the poses and your breathing.
I know, it probably sounds cooky and crazy with people breathing deeply, meditating and becoming one with the poses…but here’s the thing; it is cooky and crazy and it totally works!!!

Yoga has many benefits and uses
I first started my yoga journey a few years ago. I was definitely needing to incorporate some type of exercise routine into my daily routine, and I stumbled upon yoga. I am NOT a huge fan of gyms, so I knew that I was not joining a gym. I did a little research on yoga and found that there are many levels of yoga, for all ages and stages in the practice. I was intrigued enough and almost compelled to go to a trial class. I went with a friend and had no idea what to expect. What I found is that I love it! It is very calming and easy on your mind, body and soul. I found going to a class after work really help me wind down from the day and release some of the tensions that I had carried from the stresses of the day.
Fast forward to the present, where I have phased out attending an actual yoga class and have now created an at home yoga practice routine. I have created a daily/weekly yoga routine that I feel works best for my current schedule and lifestyle. It is very simple and easy to create a yoga practice routine that you can do at home. All it takes is a little time and research to determine your personal routine.
Before you jump right in and begin your yoga practice at home, you must equip yourself with the proper tools and necessities. These items are actual items I use on a regular basis. I found these resources on my own, and I only see it fitting to share my finds with you! I hope you absolutely love these items as much as I do!
5 must have items for yoga at home
1. Yoga mat
One of THE most important items you must have if you’re going to practice yoga. Yoga mats come in a variety of materials, sizes and thicknesses, so you can choose what you like personally. SECRET: I actually use 2 yoga mats, for added padding when holding those poses longer! Check out these yoga mats.
2. Yoga block
Yoga blocks are amazing to use when you are needing a little help getting into some of the deeper stretches. They are made of a thick foam, and can be used horizontal or vertical, depending on how deep of a stretch you would like. SECRET: One of the great things about yoga is you do what poses you can. You can challenge yourself when you feel comfortable with each pose. Check out yoga blocks.
3. Yoga strap
The yoga strap help with stretching and holding poses longer, especially those poses that work on strengthening the legs. It is made of easy to clean fabric and is a must have for any yogi; beginner or advanced. Check out these yoga straps.
4. Yoga Videos
Yoga videos are important and they are so easy to follow. You can find yoga videos for beginners, advanced, for weight loss, for strength; pretty much anything you can think of. I normally use YouTube to find videos, and my favorites yoga videos are Yoga With Adriene and PsycheTruth.
5. Music app
Once you get a fairly regular routine down and you know what poses you would like to do, you could create your own thirty minute to an hour yoga sequence and have music playing to help you focus on the moment and the poses. I use this app a lot and it is great because it has a variety of meditation music to choose from, so you are not listening to the same music over and over again. You can find the app on google play and the app store.
These five items are a must have to have a successful, productive yoga practice at home!

You inspired me to start yoga again! My yoga mat is collecting dust now!
Yay! Lup, dust that thing off! 🙂
I’ve been practicing yoga for 20 years and have been teaching for 15. This is a great list! You really have included everything. I’m so glad you love yoga and are sharing that love with the world.
Thanks Christa! I’m so glad I found my “thing” with yoga!
I loved yoga when I was pregnant, but have had a hard time sticking with it otherwise. I really like PiYo though, which is a combo of yoga and pilates.
Emma, PiYo sounds interesting…I’ll have to check that out!
I tried Yoga when I was pregnant and didn’t really like it, but maybe I should try again now that I don’t have a huge belly lol
Diana, haha! I had a yoga instructor that was pregnant and I always wondered how she did it! Yes, try again, you never know, you may love it!
This is a great list. I love the items you picked. I’m going to have to try some of these for sure.
Yoga is my favorite form of exercise! I like Lesley Fightmaster on Youtube. I have a mat, but I don’t actually use any other equipment. She discusses several ways you can modify your practice with things you already have (like towels, ties, and pillows).
A yoga block is very handy. It really helps me to modify the harder moves.
Michele, it helps me too! It’s awesome!
I need to incorporate more yoga in my life. I always want to and just haven’t. Thanks for the inspiration!
My pleasure Tabitha!
I didn’t know there were essential oils for yoga. What a game changer!! Love it.
Alina, oh yes, definitely a game changer!
I have done a little in the past and I am thinking to start again for so long now. May be this is the sign that its time to start again. Thanks.
The music is a must. I also find after awhile I memorize the routine.
Great list! I really need to get myself a yoga block one of these days.
I love Yoga and EOs!!!
I’m missing a few items… I only have the yoga mat! I’ll be honest, I only do simple yoga stretches when my muscles ache or I’ve had a stressful day. Who knows? I may take it up a bit more intensely. Bookmarking your list!
Recently read a book about yoga and the journey it took the author. Because of it my interest in yoga piqued. Your article came at the right moment since going out for exercising is not possible. I do all exercises at home. Next mission is finding yoga videos. Thank you!
I have been wanting to take up yoga for years but never quite got round to it. Maybe now is the time to start! 😊
Yoga videos have definitely been the key to home practice for me!
This is a great Yoga post for beginners. Some of these items i would have never thought of. I will save this for later.
This is a great list. I’ve considered picking up yoga, because I really need to do something, and this is helpful for getting started!
I have contemplated yoga for a while i May have to go ahead and start. Thanks!
I love yoga as well! I am like you and usually have to do videos to suit my family’s schedule, but I find something special and grounding to attend a class and practice with others. Great list of must haves!
I always talk about getting into yoga but never do seeing how little items I need and how I basically already have them all, I should really give it a try. I’m always offset by not knowing where to start or what poses I should do but seeing you list Yoga With Adriene and PsycheTruth has made it easier. Thanks!

While I don’t do formal yoga, I have learned to appreciate an informal stretch session every morning. I learned these stretches when I took an adult dance class last year and now I don’t attend the class, but I love the stretches! Thanks for sharing.
Yoga block is the only thing I am missing. and yes, will be trying Yoga soon. I feel motivated . =)
Props to you!! Every time I have tried yoga I just get bored. Maybe I’m not doing it right! Lol I didn’t have many of these things.
I love doing Yoga. I just wish I had more time to do it as often as I like. Thanks for the must-haves – I’m loving the essential oils. Definitely going to check that out.
